The Market Modeling team
The Market Modeling Team supports Morgan Stanley's securities trading business by developing and implementing complex mathematical models and tools to price and risk manage various financial derivative products. Our staff typically has background in mathematics, physics, engineering, computer sciences, informatics or other similar quantitative areas. Many of them possess a PhD or are close to earn the degree in the near future.
Technical Responsibilities of the intern:
Internship in CMBS team
- Create and maintain the historical commercial loan database containing around 10 million rows
- Develop statistical or other methods to deal with missing or incomplete data
- Participate in the development of statistical methods of modeling loan behavior based on historical records and recent changes in the business paradigm
- Be open to learn and apply new technologies and programming languages
Internship in Whole Loan - Conduit team
- Develop software tools for analyzing the trading desk's current mortgage portfolio, and their hedging products
- Contribute to improving pricing and risk calculation models for residential mortgages and related products
- Be open to learn and apply new technologies and programming languages, most importantly Q/Kdb+.
Skills Required
For CMBS internship
- B.Sc. or M.Sc. in mathematical finance, applied mathematics, physics, statistics, engineering, computer science or similar quantitative area.
- Interest in finance and mathematics
- Experience with relational databases and SQL
- Some programming experience in any language
- Confident command of English
For Whole Loan - Conduit team internship
- B.Sc. or M.Sc. in mathematical finance, applied mathematics, physics, statistics, engineering, computer science, informatics or similar quantitative area
- Interest in finance and mathematics (probability theory and statistics)
- Strong problem solving and analytical skills
- Some experience in one industry standard programming language (eg. C++, Java, Perl, Python)
- Experience with relational databases and SQL
- Excellent teamwork, communication, and English skills
- Ability to understand all aspects of a multicultural environment
Skills Desired
- Strong user level in Linux/Unix Operating System
- Knowledge of script languages (perl, bash, awk, python) is an advantage
- Knowledge of statistics, numerical analysis or stochastic calculus is an advantage
- Knowledge of Databases
- Experience with complex IT systems
- Knowledge of JavaScript / HTML5 / shell scripting
- Knowledge of a functional language (ideally Q/Kdb+)
